Advance your career and maximize your impact on public health and healthcare
Learn how to lead transformative change in health and healthcare through the Dartmouth Online/Hybrid Master of Public Health program. The Online/Hybrid Master of Public Health (MPH) program is designed for working professionals. The 22-month program enables you to pursue your MPH with minimal time away from your family and job. You’ll learn the skills and knowledge to lead transformative change in public health and healthcare through coursework such as:
- Determinants of Health
- Health Policy
- Quality Improvement
- Health Services Research
- Epidemiology and Biostatistics
- Leading Change
Along the way, you will work with a small group of 30-40 peers who bring a variety of experiences and perspectives to the program as physicians, nurses, social workers, program managers, researchers, policy analysts, and administrators. With a 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio, you’ll also have direct access to Geisel’s world-renowned faculty.
Here’s how the program works
Foundations of Public Health: Students in the residential and online/hybrid programs begin their studies in July with a three-week, entirely online, asynchronous ‘Foundations of Public Health’ course. We recognize incoming students have various backgrounds and experiences in public health, so this course provides a broad background on basic public health concepts so that you can take a deeper dive into the material throughout the program.
Courses: Students take one course at a time online, with about 15-20 hours of schoolwork per week. Courses are 3-5 weeks in length. Assignment due dates are consistent and predictable to allow students to plan ahead and complete assignments when time permits.
Intensive On-Campus Sessions: Students come to campus three times (August, December, and March) during their first year in the program and twice (December and March) in the second year of the program. Each on-campus visit is four days in length and consists of active learning sessions, experiential learning, student presentations, guest speakers, community building, workshops, downtime to explore the beautiful Dartmouth campus, networking, and a rich exchange of knowledge between students, faculty, and staff.
- Effective August 2024, students will be given the option of participating in the Intensive Learning weeks virtually. In-person attendance at the intensive on-campus weeks is encouraged. The weeks are highly participatory, which is best suited to an in-person learning environment.
Practicum: Students are given the opportunity to dive deeper into a topic of their choice through the practicum intensive course which spans the entire duration of the program. Mentored by a Dartmouth faculty member, students design and complete a practicum project of their choice. The practicum project can range from a quality improvement project in a medical care setting to a policy analysis/development project.
Student Groups: Whether online or on campus, you’ll have opportunities to network and collaborate with peers, faculty, staff, and alumni and exchange knowledge about the most pressing issues in public health. There are a variety of extracurricular activities at Geisel that online and residential students can participate in. Popular among our MPH students, we have the Global Health Fellows, Indian Health Services trip, UNICEF club, Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations, and various unique opportunities at Dartmouth’s Center of Health Equity.
