An innovative, liberal arts approach to pre-health education
Through the Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations suite of programming, students will grapple with questions of advocacy, explore empathy and the culture of biomedicine, and reflect on how humanistic approaches provide an orientation toward compassionate engagement and serve as a guard against cynicism and fatigue in the complex work of healthcare. Sessions are led by top Dartmouth faculty, global health leaders, and clinicians to explore linkages between the humanities, social sciences, public health, and medicine. The program is open to all undergraduate and graduate students or early career professionals from any institution.
Background and Mission
With generous funding provided by Eric Eichler ’57, Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations offers a suite of programs designed to develop a new method of training future leaders in healthcare. Dartmouth alumnus Eric Eichler ’57 partnered with The Dartmouth Institute to model a holistic approach to healthcare education. This effort began in November 2017 and is comprised of several components:
The Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations Society for Medical Humanities represents the broader community of participants in our full suite of programs, including alumni, Dartmouth students, and students from our national and global networks. Each month, we host Foundations Conversations, open to Society members, to create additional learning and professional development opportunities for our expanding network of learners.
The Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations Summer Intensive for pre-health students from around the country. During a week-long, on-campus seminar in July, participants delve into the connections between healthcare and humanities, working closely with global and local experts in the field.
The Eichler ’57 Senior Fellowship for Healthcare Leaders at Dartmouth College links selected Dartmouth undergraduate senior students with service projects and individually mentored learning.
The Eichler ’57 Foundations in Medicine and Humanities Seminar Series, a monthly seminar open to all who are interested in these topics.
Dartmouth Generations, a student-led organization for students who are interested in learning about dementia and other aging issues and getting to know older members of the Upper Valley Community.
Join us virtually at our monthly Eric Eichler ’57 Foundations in Medicine and Humanities Seminar Series!
