Geisel Welcomes Hybrid MPH Students Back to Campus for March Intensive Learning Week Session
The arrival of spring marked a warm welcome for students in the Geisel School of Medicine’s Hybrid Master of Public Health (MPH) program as the cohort returned to campus last week for their March Intensive Learning Week session. The program’s hybrid format features a 22-month online curriculum, complemented by five week-long on-campus sessions at Dartmouth’s Upper Valley campus throughout the program’s duration.
This March, students kicked off the week on Monday morning with a welcome breakfast and opening remarks from Craig Westling, DrPH, MPH ’09, MS, Associate Dean of Health Sciences Education, and Hybrid MPH Program Director Megan Read, who provided an overview of the program.
The week’s full schedule included course learning sessions, experiential learning, networking opportunities, workshops, guest speakers, and meetings with faculty and staff. Students attended a variety of learning sessions such as Your Core Values and Professional Brand, Enhancing Communication and Teamwork, Psychological Safety, Introduction to Survey and Qualitative Methods, Biostatistics, Navigating Public Health: Challenges and Opportunities in Today’s Landscape, Fireside Chats, and for second-year students, Graduation and Beyond.
In addition to academic sessions, many students took part in social events and excursions, including a welcome-back happy hour at Sawtooth Restaurant, morning yoga, a celebratory dinner at Molly’s in downtown Hanover, and more. These activities offered students the chance to connect with their peers and instructors outside the classroom.
"The Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) presentations are truly a highlight of the program. Through these projects, students showcase their ability to apply public health knowledge and skills to real-world challenges of their choosing. By the time they present their ILE work, they have become subject matter experts in their respective topics, sharing their insights with fellow students, faculty, and staff.
The Intensive Learning Weeks foster a dynamic exchange of knowledge and ideas, but this is especially true during the March session, when graduating students present their ILE projects. These presentations not only reflect the depth of their expertise but also enrich the collective learning experience of the entire academic community." - Megan Read, Director of the Hybrid MPH Program
A highlight of the week was the Hybrid MPH Class of 2025 Integrative Learning Experience (ILE) Presentations, which took place in Kellogg Hall throughout the week. The ILE presentations represent the culmination of the practicum course, which runs throughout the program. During this final on-campus session, students present their completed work to faculty and classmates, and share their results with their on-site preceptors.
