Practicum Highlight
Jenna Murray’s practicum work uncovers new priorities for ensuring healthcare organizations are adequately meeting the known needs of patients undergoing medical detoxification.
The online/hybrid MPH program includes a concurrent practicum course that runs throughout the entire program, combining aspects of both the Master’s thesis (the integrative learning experience) and internship (the applied practice experience). Students develop and execute their own individual practicum with faculty support, focusing on a specific problem area or question.
By employing systems thinking, qualitative and quantitative methods, along with effective inquiry, students develop actionable insights and feasible recommendations for a diverse array of public and population health sites, including health systems, nonprofits, and community organizations.
Students produce an academic product (e.g., a publishable paper, policy white paper, or grant proposal), present their final work to faculty and classmates during the final March on-campus period, and present their results to their on-site preceptor. Skills gained during the practicum enable students to develop or refine policy, generate new knowledge in a real-world setting, and, ultimately, improve health and healthcare across the country.
