Student Spotlight: Chris Bloomer, MBA/MPH'25
Chris Bloomer, an MBA/MPH candidate, reflects on his path to public health and his experience as a student in Dartmouth's accelerated MPH program.
Chris is currently pursuing a joint MBA/MPH degree, offered through the Tuck School of Business and the Geisel School of Medicine. This program prepares graduates for leadership roles in the healthcare industry, spanning both private and public sectors. By combining top-tier leadership and management education with cutting-edge public health research and practice, the MBA/MPH program equips students with the skills needed to address complex healthcare challenges.
When asked what initially sparked his interest in public health, Chris shares, “I honestly was confused by how the U.S. healthcare industry worked.” He explains that he wanted to understand how to align incentives between payers, patients, and providers, as well as how to navigate the constraints and lack of transparency in the healthcare industry that prevent market forces from driving down costs and improving quality. He also hoped to explore digital health and AI solutions that can address staffing shortages, making care more efficient and regionalized to improve patient health outcomes.
“I wanted to examine use cases where costs could be lowered without compromising health outcomes.”Chris continues, “I want to make a positive impact on the healthcare industry, and I recognized that I needed to learn more about population health and reimbursement before returning to the industry as a consultant.”
Before coming to Dartmouth, Chris worked in healthcare consulting and co-directed a Kenyan-based charity, Shed A Light, which focuses on building infrastructure for free education and wellness services. During his time at Dartmouth, he interned at CVS Health, furthering his education in healthcare operations. After graduation, he plans to return to healthcare consulting, this time with Strategy& PwC in New York City. In the long term, Chris aspires to work at the intersection of healthcare, business, and data science, helping organizations navigate healthcare challenges.
“At Dartmouth, I found that professors are just as curious as students and are eager to tackle unanswered or uncertain questions together.”
When asked for advice for incoming students, Chris encourages the Dartmouth community to connect with peers and alumni working in healthcare through networking and recruitment events, course selection, and attending on-campus talks. He particularly values the collaborations he has had with students and professors across various graduate programs, including the Geisel School of Medicine, the Thayer School of Engineering, and the Tuck School of Business. Through these collaborations, he has expanded his knowledge of effective medical interventions, cutting-edge technology, and opportunities for funding innovation. “And of course,” he adds, “take advantage of the skiing and hiking in and around the Upper Valley. Being in nature can significantly improve your mental health.”
