Foundations? Society? Fellowship? Eichler? What's the connection?
With generous funding provided by Eric Eichler, D’57, Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations offers a suite of programs designed to develop a new method of training future leaders in healthcare. Dartmouth alumnus Eric Eichler, D’57, partnered with The Dartmouth Institute within the Geisel School of Medicine to model a holistic approach to healthcare education. This effort began in November 2017 and is comprised of several primary activities:
COSO-recognized, student-led Dartmouth Generations
Summer Intensive/Summer Institute
Eichler Senior Fellowship for Healthcare Leaders
Eichler Medicine and Humanities Seminar Series
Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations Society for Medical Humanities
This interdisciplinary seminar series convenes approximately monthly throughout the academic year. The seminars feature guest speakers from medicine, public health, the humanities and social sciences. The seminars are open to the public and are either held virtually or hybrid. The Dartmouth Healthcare Foundations Society for Medical Humanities is a community dedicated to applying concepts and methods from the humanities and social sciences to the most pressing issues in contemporary healthcare. Foundations Society members will have access to an international community of students pursuing a range of careers in healthcare, including clinical medicine, public health, research, and policy. Foundations Society members will learn from leaders in global health and faculty from the arts, humanities, and medical sciences to think holistically and creatively about healthcare using a humanistic approach.
As a part of the Foundations Society, you will have opportunities to meet monthly in facilitated discussions with a variety of faculty and students from around the world interested in healthcare. In this learning community, you will work through selected readings, refine your perspectives on healthcare topics, and create a network of committed scholars. We see this as an opportunity to support students in developing language and skills as they prepare to enter their healthcare careers.
Membership in the Foundations Society with all of its associated benefits is life-long.
The Foundations Society is open to all undergraduate, graduate students, or early-career professionals from any institution.
Your application to the Foundations Society requires that you provide the name and contact information of a person who can provide a reference. This person should be able to speak to your interest in healthcare, your work ethic, and your capacity to contribute to and benefit from participation in Society activities. Examples might include a professor, mentor, supervisor, school or work colleague, etc.
With generous funding provided by Eric Eichler ’57, outstanding Dartmouth senior-year students will be selected as The Eric Eichler ’57 Fellowship for Healthcare Leaders. This one-year fellowship includes mentorship with senior faculty and researchers to guide your exploration of research, policy, or health outcomes improvement work through community service.
Dartmouth Seniors are welcome to apply to this highly selective, year-long fellowship, offering mentorship with senior faculty and researchers. Fellows will be trained in community engagement methods, use poetry as a tool for introspection and reflection, participate in a year-long service project, engage in didactic sessions led by Dr. Mishra and Prof. Carpenter-Song, and contribute to the fellowship through various leadership opportunities.
