No specific undergraduate coursework is required for admission to the program.
The MS in Healthcare Research prepares students for careers in research, academia, and healthcare. Designed for those interested in publishing research or pursuing a Ph.D., the program builds expertise in qualitative and quantitative research methods, survey design, and research analysis.
Students can engage in independent research (Integrative Learning Experience) or an internship (Applied Practice Experience) through the Practicum Intensive. With faculty support, students design and execute projects focused on specific research questions or problem areas. These experiences enhance skills in policy development, knowledge generation, and real-world healthcare improvement. Practicum electives are optional enrichment opportunities.
This program is ideal for experienced researchers, aspiring academics, and physicians seeking to enhance their research skills as clinician-investigators.
The Dartmouth MS in Healthcare Research cohort consists of 20–30 students from diverse academic and professional backgrounds. The program attracts early-career professionals as well as mid-career individuals looking to transition into healthcare research. Small class sizes foster close mentorship and collaboration.
This is a full-time program, requiring approximately 55 hours per week of coursework and class time.
While it is possible to work while enrolled, the program’s full-time nature requires a significant time commitment. Some students manage part-time work with flexible or remote hours, but many focus on research assistantships or internships that align with their academic goals.
Students in good academic standing have the opportunity to pursue an independent research project (Integrative Learning Experience) or an independent internship (Applied Practice Experience) through the Practicum Intensive.
Students receive personalized mentorship from faculty advisors, who guide them in research design, methodology, data analysis, and publication. The program also fosters collaboration with faculty and peers, encouraging an interdisciplinary research approach.
The MS in Healthcare Research is closely affiliated with Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. Students collaborate with clinicians and researchers on clinical trials and healthcare studies, gaining hands-on experience with real-world clinical data, research labs, and ongoing investigations in outcomes research, epidemiology, and health systems.
