Anita Agoh Advocates for Maternal and Young Adolescent Health in Nigeria

Anita, what about Dartmouth's MPH program made you feel like it would be the right fit, right now in the evolution of your career? 

After my undergraduate career at the University of California, Berkeley, I worked at Genentech Biotechnology Company educating patients about their health insurance coverage. Then I moved into a fundraising capacity working to provide grants for local non-profit organizations. Each of my previous career positions were geared towards continuing my education in healthcare services and fundraising. I was attracted to Dartmouth's MPH program because of the curriculum and especially because of the Dartmouth Atlas Project. I would like to create a similar project for my home country in Nigeria. I believe a lot of the reason why the healthcare system in rural Nigeria remains underdeveloped is because there is lack of research and data on healthcare delivery variation. 

What are some of the areas you are most interested in learning more about/investigating at Dartmouth?I am interested in learning more ways of obtaining actionable healthcare data and creating a platform where people can easily access this information. This information is extremely vital in keeping the system, government, and professionals accountable for improving healthcare. 

Where do you want to influence change in public health and healthcare?

My future goal is pursuing a PhD in public health and expanding the non-profit organization I started in Nigeria called iCare, which is focused on promoting maternal and young adolescent health. I also want to expand access to hygienic and personal health products for young women in rural parts of Nigeria. My aim is to see an increase in school attendance and decrease in child marriages and preventable health issues.
