Dartmouth Institute MPH Student Spotlight: Daniel Wallingford
As a registered nurse for over a decade, Daniel Wallingford has been consistently driven toward roles that would enable him to impact public health: first in a community health clinic setting and then at the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. At the NYC Health Department, Wallingford first worked at the World Trade Center Health Registry, a long-term health study monitoring the health of people exposed to the events of 9/11. His job involved conducting clinical research, such as respiratory testing and mental health interviews, as well as identifying study participants with unmet healthcare needs and referring them for appropriate care. Next, he spent two years working in the bureau of STD Control and Prevention, providing STD testing and treatment, as well as time sensitive services such as emergency contraception and HIV pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis. Today, he is the director of the agency's Employee Health Program, which oversees the health of the roughly 6,000 employees of the NYC Health Department.

“A career with the health department appealed to me because it is the preeminent institution dedicated to improving the health of the diverse population of New York City, and focused on reducing health outcome disparities between racial and socioeconomic groups. However, I have found that even at such an illustrious and forward-thinking organization there is much room for improvement.”
