Congratulations to The Dartmouth Institute Class of 2018!
On June 8, The Dartmouth Institute celebrated 84 MPH, MS, and PhD graduates during its Class Day ceremony, at which students were hooded and awarded their diplomas. This newly minted group of Dartmouth alumni also includes the Institute's first online MPH class of 28 students.
During the ceremony, Dartmouth Institute Director Elliott Fisher, MD, MPH, spoke to the graduating class about courage—the courage that will be required in what he called “these challenging times.” Fisher told the graduates while they had gained very valuable skills and knowledge at The Dartmouth Institute, they would need more than skills and knowledge to make the world a better place and to thrive both as individuals and members of (their) communities.
"We know what great healthcare should look like: much better information on the risks and benefits of interventions; ensuring that patients’ goals, values and preferences are at the core of everything we do; delivering care in ways that do not waste our patients’ time and money or our communities’ resources. This is the revolution we are calling for. Unfortunately, we are not there yet. Getting there will require persistence—the courage to keep going." (A full copy of Dr. Fisher's speech is available here)
Brent Quimby, the student speaker from the Institute's on-campus programs, advised his classmates to work together as teams to tackle these challenges.
"If you truly want to build great organizations and make a difference in this complex and uncertain world, focus just as much attention on developing teams, showing empathy, and being compassionate."
Quoting an adapted version of Dr. Seuss' Oh, the Places You'll Go, Cheryl Shefchik, the student speaker for the graduating online MPH students, advised her classmates to:
Go on, you healthcare rebels,
Go do what you’ll do
Remember our journey
And that I’m with you.
