The New Hampshire Area Health Education Center (AHEC) is a statewide network that works to improve health care and access to health care, particularly in rural and underserved areas, by enhancing the health and public health workforce of the state.
The NH AHEC network provides educational outreach and support to health care providers in practice, students in training programs for health professions, and young people considering a career in health care. To practicing healthcare providers, we offer continuing education that is responsive to their needs and interests, emerging health issues, and changes in the healthcare landscape. Educational programs are offered at times and locations convenient to practitioners, and range from short “lunch and learn” workshops to multi-day conferences. CME, nursing, social work, and other professional credits are available.
We have developed an innovative program for health professions students: New Hampshire AHEC Health Service Scholars. This two year program offers medical, nursing, physician assistant, and nurse practitioner students opportunities to participate in interprofessional training at clinical sites in medically underserved areas, engaging in didactic learning around emerging issues that impact rural and underserved communities, and have opportunities to engage with community experiences unique only to this program. In addition, students can participate in group work, case work, simulation, and on-site immersion at a community health center.
We offer young people opportunities to learn about health care and health careers in classroom activities, day camps, and the residential institute Health Careers Institute at Dartmouth on the Dartmouth College campus. Participants have opportunities for hands-on learning activities, exploration of careers and career interests, and exposure to role models.
The NH AHEC network is a partnership between The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice and the northern and southern regional AHECs, in Littleton and Raymond, NH, respectively. Together, we collaborate with many statewide and community agencies, organizations, schools, and postsecondary academic institutions to assess and address the needs of the healthcare workforce.
