The Dartmouth MPH Journey for C.J. Blomquist Offers Opportunities to Personalize Healthcare Delivery
C.J., What about Dartmouth's MPH program made you feel like it would be the right fit, right now in the evolution of your career?
I’ve been fortunate to work in operations, compliance, and consulting in all levels of healthcare, from hospices to health plans, to research and development, and to independent physician associations (IPAs). IPAs are basically the networks between health plans and providers. Coming from Southern California, where healthcare is at its most complex, my experiences have opened my eyes to the tangled web we’ve woven. The Dartmouth MPH program, with its focus on healthcare systems, just made sense. If I’m ever going to understand how we deliver care, this is the place to learn. Moreover, the ability to learn from my peers – all leaders in their own healthcare specialties – adds incredible value to this program.
What are some of the areas you’re most interested in learning more about/investigating at Dartmouth? How do we understand a patient’s aspirations and goals, and how do we make their health part of those? Not everyone is focused on their health, while others are perhaps too concerned. By understanding the behaviors and beliefs that drive a person’s daily actions, we can find ways to make health more meaningful and tangible.
Where do you want to influence change in public health and healthcare?
I hope to bring a new level of individualization to healthcare. We have incredible technologies that can provide customized, specific products to us based on our interests. Why not take that technology and apply it to healthcare? I’ve only worked in healthcare, but my time designing data strategies for an artificial intelligence-based platform has fundamentally changed how I view the possibilities of healthcare delivery.
“In my dream life I would be designing a technology platform to use patients’ aspirations and beliefs to guide how we as healthcare professionals engage with them.”
