From Data to Diamonds: Joe Gyorda’s Journey from Dartmouth to the Chicago Cubs
Joseph Gyorda, MS Alumni Spotlight: Working at the intersection of sports science, medicine, and data analytics.
New Hampshire native Joseph Gyorda grew up an avid sports fan with a natural inclination toward math and statistics. After earning his MS in Health Data Science from Dartmouth in 2023, Joe joined the Chicago Cubs as an analyst on the Baseball Sciences team. "After graduating from Dartmouth, I discovered this unique role with the Cubs, where I can combine my interests in sports, data science, and health," Joe shares.
In his current role, Joe uses data science to analyze player health and factors that contribute to injuries, identify biomechanics and physical traits that optimize performance, and lead other research initiatives. “We operate under the 'first principles' philosophy—taking a high-level trait like hitting performance and deconstructing it into the most basic underlying variables to help target areas of improvement in players.”
During his time at Dartmouth, Joe became interested in applying innovative methods in healthcare. “At Dartmouth, I felt motivated by the curriculum and the students around me. The breadth and depth of coursework fostered a strong understanding of data science, and I also valued the freedom to explore more creative topics, from music to world history.” Joe describes feeling inspired by his fellow cohort, whose drive and contributions to the learning community prompted him to take advantage of the many resources available to him as a Dartmouth student.
“Being surrounded by nature in the Upper Valley offered a welcome reprieve from studying whenever I needed it and helped me reach a healthy balance between work and recreation that I aim to maintain today.”
At Dartmouth, Joe worked closely with PhD students in the AIM HIGH laboratory, led by Dr. Nicholas Jacobson. There, he contributed to and led research projects focused on using technology and artificial intelligence to diagnose and track mental health symptoms. “These experiences enriched my skills as a data scientist and gave me a thorough understanding of how mental health symptoms can be detected through various data streams,” he reflects. Joe credits his academic journal submissions and weekly lab sessions at Dartmouth with sharpening his written and oral communication skills—skills he now uses in his role with the Cubs. Joe urges current, incoming, and future Dartmouth MS students to never stop learning.
“Whether in your coursework, when navigating the job market, or in your professional career – always ask questions and challenge your understanding and the understanding of those around you. Be confident in speaking up, seeking clarification, and paying attention to detail.”
