Student Spotlight: Francis Petitto, MS in Implementation Science ‘27
A Path to Creating Lasting Impact
For Francis Petitto, the gap between a good idea and lasting impact is more than a theoretical problem, it’s a daily challenge. Working in state workforce programs, he’s seen firsthand how well‑intentioned initiatives can lose momentum in the real world.
“Training fades without coaching, workflows add burden, and handoffs drift,” he explains. “I wanted the science for closing that gap between what works and what actually gets done, so frontline teams can deliver consistently and equitably.”
That search led him to the Master of Science in Implementation Science (MSIS) program at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine, where he’s pursuing the part-time track while continuing his work in government service. The flexibility of the program, paired with its interdisciplinary approach, made Dartmouth a clear choice.
“Geisel’s MSIS brings health, education, justice, and public systems into one room, and that cross-sector lens mirrors my day-to-day,” Francis says. “The culture sealed it: faculty who engage, a Center for Implementation Science that convenes doers and scholars, and a program designed so I can keep serving while I study.”
Since joining the program, Francis has been struck by the immediacy and relevance of the connections he’s made.
“From the inaugural symposium to class, professors and peers met me where I work — frontline implementation — and pushed me further,” he reflects. “The program feels both rigorous and deeply practical.”
He’s currently translating implementation frameworks such as IRLM, ERIC, and RE‑AIM into lightweight decision-support tools for public-sector use — tools that can help supervisors monitor real-time progress using simple, actionable metrics like adoption, fidelity, and time-to-service.
“I’m building systems that allow supervisors to coach, not guess,” he says.
Looking ahead, Francis plans to expand this work to improve adoption and sustainment in workforce and justice settings. He also serves as a Student Ambassador for the program and is exploring long-term opportunities in federal consulting or possibly a PhD path. The through-line in all of it, he says, is public service.
