Dartmouth to Host Inaugural Health Sciences Case Competition
Students at the Geisel School of Medicine will soon participate in the inaugural Health Sciences Case Competition, an interdisciplinary event designed to give participants hands-on experience solving complex public health challenges.
Hosted by Geisel’s MS Health Sciences Programs, the competition will take place April 17–19 and is open to all Geisel students. During the fast-paced event, students will work in multidisciplinary teams to develop a data-driven solution to a biomedical public health case. Teams will analyze the challenge from multiple perspectives, including epidemiology, data science, implementation science, and clinical medicine.
The theme of the inaugural competition is antimicrobial resistance, a growing global public health crisis that affects patient treatment, health systems, and communities worldwide. Organizers selected the case topic and deliverables with students’ learning objectives in mind, curating an experience that will mirror the challenges they confront as working professionals.
Over the course of 40 hours, student teams will research, analyze available data, and develop a compelling narrative that proposes actionable solutions. The format is intended to mirror real-world conditions in which health professionals must quickly synthesize evidence, collaborate across disciplines, and communicate their findings.
Teams will include both residential and online students from across Geisel’s programs, with each group composed of students from the Master of Public Health, Master of Science, and Doctor of Medicine programs. The competition aims to encourage collaborative problem-solving and interdisciplinary expertise.
Before the competition begins, students will have an opportunity to meet their teammates during a mixer scheduled for the first week of the Spring Term. The event will allow participants to connect across programs and build relationships ahead of the competition.
At its conclusion, teams will present their findings to a panel of judges composed of content experts from across Dartmouth and partnering organizations. Awards will be presented to the top three teams in recognition of their analysis, creativity, and clarity of communication.
Geisel looks forward to hosting its inaugural Health Sciences Case Competition and continuing to prepare students for the interdisciplinary, data-driven challenges they will encounter as future public health and health care professionals.
