Bridging Public Health and Dentistry to Improve Patient Outcomes: Reilly Ruane, MPH '23
For Reilly Ruane, MPH '23, a passion for improving health outcomes and helping others led her to pursue a career in dentistry. Now a third-year student at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry, Ruane is preparing to apply for orthodontic residency programs as she continues her path toward a career focused on patient care.
Ruane was initially drawn to dentistry because of its ability to make a meaningful difference in patients' lives.
"Oral health is sometimes overlooked despite its importance to overall health and wellbeing," she says. "Dentistry offers a unique opportunity to improve not only a patient's health but also their confidence and quality of life."
She was also attracted to the profession’s versatility and opportunities for specialization and professional growth.
After completing Dartmouth's accelerated residential Master of Public Health program in 2023, Ruane entered dental school equipped with a strong foundation in public health and research. She credits her time at Geisel with providing skills and knowledge that continue to shape her education today.
"My experience at Dartmouth provided me with skills that have been incredibly valuable throughout dental school," she says. "The program strengthened my understanding of health insurance systems, epidemiology, biostatistics, and evidence-based decision making."
The MPH curriculum also introduced Ruane to research methods that have proven valuable in her current academic work.
"I gained experience conducting systematic reviews and meta-analyses, which has been extremely beneficial as I work on a research project in dental school," she says. "Being able to critically evaluate scientific literature, interpret statistical analyses, and apply research findings to clinical practice has made me a more informed clinician and researcher."
One of the most influential experiences during Ruane's time at Dartmouth was an externship at Red Logan Dental Clinic, a free dental clinic that serves uninsured adults living within a 30-mile radius of the Upper Valley. Working alongside Dr. Kristin Bradley, DMD, MPH, and student dentist interns, she gained firsthand exposure to the field just months before beginning dental school.
"The experience allowed me to work closely with providers and see both the clinical and operational aspects of dentistry," she says. "Witnessing the impact of accessible dental care on the community was incredibly meaningful."
The externship reinforced her commitment to the profession and deepened her understanding of the role dentists can play in expanding access to care.
"Seeing firsthand how dedicated providers can improve patients' health and quality of life reinforced my passion for dentistry," she says. "It highlighted the important role dentists play in serving their communities and increasing access to care."
As she looks ahead to graduation in 2027 and the next stage of her training, Ruane remains grateful for the experiences she gained during her year in Hanover.
For current and prospective MPH students, her advice is to make the most of every opportunity.
"Take advantage of your time in the Upper Valley," she says. "Eleven months goes by much faster than you think, so make the most of every opportunity, both inside and outside of the classroom."
She encourages students to explore the region, build relationships with classmates and mentors, and embrace new experiences.
"The academic and personal experiences you gain during your time there can have a lasting impact on your future career and personal growth," she says.
