From MPH to Concierge Medicine: Nahshon Deering ’22 on Building Patient-Centered Care
Nahshon Deering, MPH ’22, has built a career at the intersection of healthcare operations, strategy, and patient-centered care. A graduate of Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine’s Online Hybrid Master of Public Health program, Nahshon currently serves as Manager of Adult Concierge Care Services at Atrium Health Concierge Care Lake Norman in North Carolina.
In his role, Nahshon oversees the day-to-day operations of the Lake Norman practice and works closely with a physician co-leader to ensure accountability across quality outcomes and organizational growth. Concierge Medicine, he explains, is a proactive and highly personalized approach to primary care that emphasizes wellness, prevention, and access to a dedicated physician through a membership-based model.
Nahshon’s interest in healthcare began during his undergraduate years, when he attended a leadership institute that introduced him to both clinical and administrative operations. “That experience opened my eyes to the breadth of opportunities in healthcare,” he says, “and ultimately drew me to public health as a way to make meaningful, system-level impact.”
At Dartmouth, Nahshon developed a strong foundation in data interpretation, systems thinking, and professional communication, skills he uses daily in his current role. He credits the MPH program with helping him think holistically about challenges. “Learning how to create logic models and evaluate systems gave me practical tools I still rely on,” he notes. One such application has been using those frameworks to support organic membership growth within the Medicine practice he manages.
That preparation proved invaluable immediately after graduation. Nahshon was selected as an Administrative Fellow at Atrium Health, a competitive fellowship designed to develop future healthcare leaders. “Thanks to my experience at Dartmouth, I felt confident and ready to step into that role,” he says.
One of the most influential aspects of Nahshon’s time at Dartmouth was the Applied Practice Experience and Integrative Learning Experience. “It gave me the flexibility to dive deeply into an area of personal interest and be intentional about where and how I conducted my research,” he says. “That experience helped shape the direction of my career.”
For incoming MPH students, Nahshon offers this advice: “Engage with your fellow cohort members as much as possible. You will never again have the opportunity to be in the same room with all your cohort members once you graduate. Take advantage of the vast collective knowledge and learn as much as you can!”
